Are you a fan of music? Well you might enjoy Across the Universe, for it has many classics hits from the Beatles. Much of the characters’ names are from their songs as well. This movie takes place during the Cold War, late 60s early 70s. It follows the lives of a group of people who all want the same thing, and that is for the war to end. From their meeting, to their separation, life in and out side of the war was always a struggle. Yet having the war effected home more then people would let on. The movie did a very immense job on showing this factor.
The incorporation of the music into this movie added a great deal to the quality. They were not only able to show their emotion and thoughts through acting, but through song as well. Each song held a different story, and was meant to have more then one meaning for different characters. As I said before, the character’s names were all part of different Beatle songs, which gave an extra twist when sang. And if that wasn’t enough, the vocals of each and everyone one of the cast was amazing. They harmonized well together, yet were still able to keep their own style of singing.
The editing in this film was very different to me. I wasn’t used to, nor prepared for the “trippy” types of effects that would go along with the films core song bits. But it was needed to help represent, and remind us of what time it was during the war. It really brought out the individualism during that time frame. I was very impressed when they always made these effects and clips fit well with the song that would be playing during the time; it added a way for me to understand the feeling of the moment.
Though at first glace from a trailer or from cover, I wouldn’t be the first to go see it. But seeing it in class. I am glad I had a chance to watch something I am sure I have yet to see before in my history of watching movies. The Vocals were amazing, as were the actors. I wasn’t a large fan of the odd effects and clips, but it was needed to give the full effect this movies was trying to deliver. All in all, I do believe this movie is worth a shot, if you have time, be sure to watch Across the Universe!
